Name: Cancao
Type: Red
Grape: Blend
Origin: Brazil
Year: Non-vintage
Producer: Antonio Basso & Filhos
Price: $3.50
The second of the 2 for $7 bottles from Brazil. This one is red and the nose on it is substantially the same as the white wine I tried, which is to say that it smells of pungent wild grapes. It also has some smells that hint of chemicals, like something with which you’d wash your car. Here’s the real surprise, it tastes almost identical to the white version as well! If you put the two side by side in a blind taste test, I’m certain no one could tell the difference. It’s direct, very sweet and tastes very much like cranberry cocktail or some other fruit drink that is mostly substances other than fruit juice. Again, it isn’t terrible it just doesn’t taste much like wine and the smell of it borders on offensive. So much for my foray into ultra-cheap Brazilian wines, which actually sounds like a less-than-great idea when said like that…
