I forayed into a new wine shop today. Actually it's more of a lottery and convenience mart with wine but it's walking distance to my house so it will do. I've stumbled upon a wine dive. Places like this are great, all the bottles are dusty and old looking and some are indeed 5 or 6 years old. I immediately ruled out buying white wines as most of them, save a few Chardonnays, are likely past their prime. This is quite a find, it's high risk wine buying at its best. You'll end up with a lot of corked, heat damaged and well over the hill wines, but once in a while you'll discover gold. So I bought 8 various bottles of red wine. The first I'm trying is a ForestVille Merlot that I know is consistently under-valued in most vintages. This one is five years old and the age is showing in the color, it is a lighter red with definite brick tones around the edge of the glass. The aroma is promising, it smells great; it's a rich, dense and jammy scent of blackberry. The flavor doesn't deliver on the promise, this bottle is well over the hill. I had my doubts about a low rent Merlot aging very well and they were justified here. I drank half and then decided to pour the rest out. Strike one.
